Kratom is legal in Michigan, and there are no laws restricting the sale or possession of kratom within the state.
Anyone who wants to purchase kratom in Michigan can do so from the brick-and-mortar or online vendor of their choice. Despite some attempts to restrict the sale of kratom, no legislation has been successful.
Kratom can be purchased at both brick-and-mortar shops and online vendors who ship to Michigan. Many kratom users prefer to shop online, as it gives them access to more varieties, products, strains, and price points than shopping in person.
Instead of being limited to what your local shop has available, you can find exactly what you’re looking for when you shop online.
Whether you’re shopping online or in person, it is important to research your kratom vendor or manufacturer. Kratom is unregulated in the US, which means unscrupulous vendors may be able to get away with misleading claims, poorly labeled products, and low-quality kratom.
Instead of buying any kratom product you see, choose a vendor who conducts rigorous lab testing and maintains meticulous manufacturing standards.
Although there have been some legislative attempts to ban kratom in Michigan, they have so far been unsuccessful.
The latest attempt to regulate kratom in Michigan comes from House Bill 4061, which was introduced in early 2023 and has not yet advanced through the legislature. This consumer protection act would limit vendors from selling kratom unless they are appropriately licensed to do so. Additionally, kratom would be illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase, possess, or consume.
The good things about this bill are the requirement of licensing, testing of products, and administrative penalties against those who violate the law.
Although the kratom industry opposes any ban on the sale of kratom, the industry does support some regulations, including:
Kratom users should expect to see other changes to the regulations surrounding kratom in the future, which may include consumer safety protections to ensure that when you buy kratom products, you know exactly what you are going to get.
The American Kratom Association is the largest kratom industry group, and they consistently advocate for FDA regulation of their products. This is because they care about their consumers and the quality of the kratom they purchase.
The AKA wants to protect consumers from unethical vendors who would sell dangerous, low-quality, inconsistent, or improperly labeled kratom products to unsuspecting buyers. If kratom is regulated, all vendors will be required to abide by certain standards related to the manufacturing and marketing of kratom.
Michigan is considering its own Kratom Consumer Protection Act because the federal Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) has not yet been successful.
Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and Utah have already passed these laws, and Michigan could be the next.

Hopefully, these future changes to kratom regulations will safeguard Michigan’s kratom users from bad products, all while maintaining the plant’s legal status.
