Is Kratom Legal in Arizona in 2024?

With a population of approximately 4.6 million people and 40 million visitors per year, the Grand Canyon State is a popular place. With so many people in the state at any given time, it’s safe to say that a percentage of them enjoy the benefits of kratom. If you’re an Arizona resident or a visitor, you may be asking yourself, “Is kratom legal in Arizona?”

To answer your question, yes, kratom is legal in Arizona. However, there is some history regarding its legality, and it currently has restrictions regarding its sale and possession. Let’s jump into the legalities of kratom in Arizona and its history with this botanical.

Kratom Legality in Arizona

What Is the Legal Status of Kratom in Arizona?

In 2014, Arizona lawmakers proposed adding kratom to the state’s list of Controlled Substances. Fortunately, for fans of kratom, it never made it to the list. If it had been added, it would have essentially made the sale and possession of kratom illegal. Kratom remained legal but was still an unregulated product, meaning that anyone of any age could purchase it. Kratom products could be sold without any labeling requirements, nor were kratom processors required to provide any information about what it contains. Fortunately, this all changed in 2019 with House Bill 2550. The Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA) was passed, and Arizona joined the ranks of states regulating the product. This was good news for kratom enthusiasts since the KCPA not only keeps kratom legal but also puts some safety regulations in place. The key points of the KCPA include:
  • Age restriction: Kratom products can only be sold to those 18 years of age or older
  • Labeling requirements: All kratom products must have labeling that clearly lists all ingredients and a suggested serving size
  • Lab testing: All kratom products must be lab-tested to ensure they don’t contain heavy metals, microbes, or illegal adulterants
The passage of the KCPA was a big win for kratom enthusiasts and advocacy groups. Fortunately, there is no upcoming legislation that would reverse this action. Arizona lawmakers are committed to keeping kratom both legal and safe.

Kratom FAQs

What Is Kratom?

Scientifically known as Mitragyna speciosa, kratom is a tropical evergreen tree that can grow as tall as 80 feet. Native to Southeast Asia, its leaves contain alkaloids that can provide everything from an uplifting boost to a serene sense of calm, depending on the serving size. Ages ago, its leaves were chewed or brewed as tea to help farmers, fishermen, and others with labor-intensive jobs to help increase productivity. Now popular in the West, it’s available as a powder, extract, capsule, or gummy.

Can Kratom Help With Depression?

Although further research is needed before a definitive answer can be made, some studies do suggest that kratom can help those suffering from depression and other emotional disorders. Kratom enthusiasts report an enhanced sense of well-being and feelings of tranquility. However, this is mostly anecdotal evidence. Before trying kratom to help ease the symptoms of any mental health issue, we strongly suggest speaking to your healthcare professional.

How Is Kratom Made?

The magic of kratom comes from its leaves. Depending on the cultivator’s goal, the tree’s leaves are harvested either when they’re new or mature. These leaves need to be dried, either by laying them out in the sun or inside modern drying facilities. Once dried, the leaves are ground into a fine powder that will either be packaged as kratom powder or further processed as extracts.
